DOCX documents are often part of larger business workflows. For example, a contract might be prepared in Word, an invoice might be generated from a template, or a report might be assembled from application data. Once the document is ready to be shared or printed, PDF provides a fixed page layout.

With TX Text Control .NET Server, you can convert DOCX documents to PDF directly within a C# application using the ServerTextControl component. Microsoft Office is not required. The same document engine loads the source document, applies any changes, and exports the resulting pages.

This tutorial first explains how to convert files from a disk or from memory. Then, it extends the workflow to include PDF/A export, PDF metadata, font deployment, and an ASP.NET Core download endpoint. The code is provided inline so that you can use it with your own Word documents.

### Typical Applications

- **Customer document delivery:** Convert completed proposals, contracts, and letters into PDFs for a customer portal or email workflow.
- **Invoice and report generation:** Export a DOCX after the application has populated its content or merged application data into a template.
- **Document archives:** Produce PDF/A output for an archive that requires a preservation format.
- **Print workflows:** Prepare paginated documents for printing after checking fonts, tables, page breaks, headers, and footers.
- **Web and background services:** Convert documents received as uploads or retrieved from storage without introducing temporary files into the conversion method.

PDF conversion is the rendering step in these workflows. Storage, delivery, approval, and retention remain responsibilities of the surrounding application. Our [PDF conversion overview](https://www.textcontrol.com/blog/2025/08/05/pdf-conversion-in-dotnet-convert-docx-html-and-more-with-csharp/llms-full.txt) discusses additional supported source formats.

### Preparing the Application

The code below uses a .NET 10 console application and the TXTextControl.TextControl.Core.SDK package. You need the .NET 10 SDK and access to a licensed or trial version of TX Text Control .NET Server.

> **TX Text Control .NET Server**
>
> Use an appropriately licensed SDK or trial installation and configure the corresponding NuGet package source before installing the package.
>
> [Download a trial](https://www.textcontrol.com/product/tx-text-control-dotnet-server/download/)

Create a console project using the .NET CLI:

```bash
dotnet new console --name DocxToPdf --framework net10.0
cd DocxToPdf
```

Before installing the package, configure your Text Control package source. Licensed customers can place their personalized nuget.config in the project directory, following the [private NuGet feed instructions](https://www.textcontrol.com/blog/2026/02/09/text-control-private-nuget-feed/llms-full.txt). With an installed trial, use the package source provided by the trial installation.

```bash
dotnet add package TXTextControl.TextControl.Core.SDK
```

The package provides the document processing runtime and the core font resources. Once the dependency is available, the conversion uses three operations: initializing the document engine, importing the DOCX file, and exporting the PDF file.

### Converting a DOCX File to PDF

Place a Word document named sample.docx in the project directory. The following Program.cs loads it from disk and writes result.pdf:

```csharp
using System;
using System.IO;
using TXTextControl;
string inputPath = Path.GetFullPath("sample.docx");
string outputPath = Path.GetFullPath("result.pdf");
if (!File.Exists(inputPath))
{
    throw new FileNotFoundException(
        "The input DOCX document was not found.", inputPath);
}
using var document = new ServerTextControl();
if (!document.Create())
{
    throw new InvalidOperationException(
        "The document engine could not be initialized.");
}
document.Load(inputPath, StreamType.WordprocessingML);
document.Save(outputPath, StreamType.AdobePDF);
Console.WriteLine($"PDF created: {outputPath}");
```

Run the application from the project directory:

```bash
dotnet run
```

The paths resolve against the current working directory. Save creates the output file or overwrites an existing file at that path, so choose the output location intentionally.

| Operation | Purpose |
|---|---|
| [Create()](https://docs.textcontrol.com/textcontrol/asp-dotnet/ref.txtextcontrol.servertextcontrol.create.method.htm) | Initializes the resources of the new instance. It must run before the object is used and returns a Boolean indicating whether initialization succeeded. |
| [Load(...)](https://docs.textcontrol.com/textcontrol/asp-dotnet/ref.txtextcontrol.servertextcontrol.load.method.htm) | Imports the document. StreamType.WordprocessingML identifies the DOCX format. |
| [Save(...)](https://docs.textcontrol.com/textcontrol/asp-dotnet/ref.txtextcontrol.servertextcontrol.save.method.htm) | Exports the loaded document. StreamType.AdobePDF selects PDF output. |

The using declaration disposes of the instance when the scope ends, including when loading or saving throws an exception. The engine lays out the source document during processing; the PDF contains the resulting pages.

### Converting Documents in Memory

In a web application or background service, the source document may already be a byte array, for example after reading it from a database, object storage, or an uploaded file. The binary overloads accept DOCX bytes and return PDF bytes without requiring an intermediate input or output file.

The following helper separates document conversion from the caller's storage and delivery logic:

```csharp
using System;
using TXTextControl;
public static class DocumentConverter
{
    public static byte[] ConvertDocxToPdf(byte[] docxData)
    {
        ArgumentNullException.ThrowIfNull(docxData);
        if (docxData.Length == 0)
        {
            throw new ArgumentException(
                "The input document must not be empty.", nameof(docxData));
        }
        using var document = new ServerTextControl();
        if (!document.Create())
        {
            throw new InvalidOperationException(
                "The document engine could not be initialized.");
        }
        document.Load(docxData, BinaryStreamType.WordprocessingML);
        document.Save(out byte[] pdfData, BinaryStreamType.AdobePDF);
        return pdfData;
    }
}
```

Call the helper with data from your existing application. For a simple file-based call, the storage operations remain outside the converter:

```csharp
byte[] docxData = File.ReadAllBytes("sample.docx");
byte[] pdfData = DocumentConverter.ConvertDocxToPdf(docxData);
File.WriteAllBytes("result.pdf", pdfData);
```

The out parameter receives the generated PDF. Text Control allocates the output array, so the caller does not need to allocate it before calling Save. The returned bytes can be stored, attached to a message, or sent as an HTTP response.

#### Choosing the Correct Enumeration

The format enumeration depends on the overload. A file path and a byte array use different API signatures even though both represent the same document format:

| Input or output | DOCX input | PDF output |
|---|---|---|
| File path | StreamType.WordprocessingML | StreamType.AdobePDF |
| Byte array | BinaryStreamType.WordprocessingML | BinaryStreamType.AdobePDF |

Renaming a file to .pdf does not convert it. The output format passed to Save determines how Text Control writes the document.

### Returning the PDF from ASP.NET Core

An ASP.NET Core application can reuse the byte-array converter. With the helper available in the host project and the Text Control SDK configured there, an endpoint can accept the raw DOCX request body and return a downloadable PDF:

```csharp
app.MapPost("/convert/docx-to-pdf", async (
    HttpRequest request,
    CancellationToken cancellationToken) =>
{
    using var buffer = new MemoryStream();
    await request.Body.CopyToAsync(buffer, cancellationToken);
    byte[] pdfData = DocumentConverter.ConvertDocxToPdf(buffer.ToArray());
    return Results.File(pdfData, "application/pdf", "converted.pdf");
});
```

This snippet belongs in an existing ASP.NET Core application's route configuration. It receives the file as a binary body, rather than multipart form data. A browser upload handler can use the same converter after reading the uploaded document.

Request reading is asynchronous, while the Load and Save methods shown here are synchronous. The byte-array approach also holds the input and output in memory. Apply the upload limits, authorization, and error responses appropriate to your application; for high-volume or long-running work, use bounded worker processing. Our [production PDF generation pipeline article](https://www.textcontrol.com/blog/2026/10/12/reliable-pdf-generation-pipeline-csharp-aspnet-core/llms-full.txt) covers durable jobs, retries, and delivery.

### Exporting PDF/A for Archiving

If your archive requires PDF/A, replace the PDF format in the Save call. For a file path, use:

```csharp
document.Save(outputPath, StreamType.AdobePDFA);
```

For a byte array, use the corresponding binary enumeration:

```csharp
document.Save(out byte[] pdfData, BinaryStreamType.AdobePDFA);
```

The initialization and DOCX loading steps remain the same. PDF/A is intended for long-term preservation and places requirements on the saved document, including font handling. Select the output according to the destination archive's requirements and validate the produced files as part of that workflow.

Our [earlier DOCX-to-PDF tutorial](https://www.textcontrol.com/blog/2024/08/09/programmatically-convert-ms-word-docx-documents-to-pdf-in-net-c-sharp/llms-full.txt) discusses PDF/A and additional export settings. The [StreamType](https://docs.textcontrol.com/textcontrol/asp-dotnet/ref.txtextcontrol.streamtype.enumeration.htm) and [BinaryStreamType](https://docs.textcontrol.com/textcontrol/asp-dotnet/ref.txtextcontrol.binarystreamtype.enumeration.htm) references list the available format values.

### Adding PDF Document Metadata

Conversion can also apply document information at export time. SaveSettings provides properties such as DocumentTitle, Author, and DocumentSubject. After loading the DOCX, replace the basic PDF save call with:

```csharp
var settings = new SaveSettings
{
    DocumentTitle = "Customer report",
    Author = "Example Company",
    DocumentSubject = "Completed report for delivery"
};
document.Save(outputPath, StreamType.AdobePDF, settings);
```

The byte-array save overload also accepts SaveSettings as its third argument. Setting metadata explicitly is useful when the final document's title or author should be provided by the application. These values describe the document; they do not change its visible body content.

The [SaveSettings API reference](https://docs.textcontrol.com/textcontrol/asp-dotnet/ref.txtextcontrol.savesettings.class.htm) documents further export options. Choose additional settings according to the output format and document workflow.

### Deploying the Required Fonts

Font availability affects conversion results. Different fonts have different character widths and line metrics, so substituting a missing font can change line wrapping and pagination. Check the fonts used by the source DOCX in the environment that will perform the conversion.

The Core font system includes a Fonts folder with a standard font set. Additional fonts can be copied to that folder as part of deployment, or an extra directory can be registered with the static ServerTextControl.InstallFonts method:

```csharp
string fontDirectory = Path.Combine(
    AppContext.BaseDirectory, "Additional Fonts");
ServerTextControl.InstallFonts(fontDirectory);
```

The directory must contain the fonts needed by your documents. Register it during application startup, before converting documents. Using AppContext.BaseDirectory makes this directory relative to the deployed application rather than the current working directory.

The [Core font-system documentation](https://docs.textcontrol.com/textcontrol/asp-dotnet/article.aspnetcore.fontsystem.htm) explains the built-in folder and additional font registration. Before deployment, inspect representative PDFs containing tables, page breaks, headers, footers, symbols, and the languages used by your application.

### Extending the Conversion Workflow

A loaded DOCX remains available through the Text Control document API until it is exported. The application can update content, adjust page settings, or add headers and footers before calling Save. Conversion can therefore be the final step of the same process that prepares the document.

For example, a reporting service can populate a document, apply its final metadata, and return PDF bytes. A batch worker can retrieve DOCX bytes from storage and store the converted output. The converter owns the document instance, while each caller controls how its input and result are obtained and delivered.

For more about layout during conversion, see [DOCX-to-PDF conversion with text reflow](https://www.textcontrol.com/blog/2025/06/10/convert-ms-word-docx-to-pdf-including-text-reflow-using-dotnet-csharp-on-linux/llms-full.txt). Keep font resources and conversion settings consistent across the environments in which you test and deploy the workflow.

### Conclusion

Converting DOCX to PDF with TX Text Control follows a small API sequence: create the document engine, load the Word document, and save it in the required PDF format. File-path and byte-array overloads allow the same operation to fit console applications, web endpoints, and background services.

Use PDF/A when required by the archive, provide the fonts used by your documents, and apply metadata through SaveSettings when needed. ### Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a DOCX file to PDF in C#?
-------------------------------------------

Create a ServerTextControl instance, call Create(), load the source document with StreamType.WordprocessingML, and save it with StreamType.AdobePDF. The same document engine can make content or layout changes before exporting the PDF.

Is Microsoft Office required for the conversion?
-------------------------------------------------

No. TX Text Control loads and renders the document through its own document engine. The code requires a compatible .NET runtime and an appropriately licensed TX Text Control SDK, rather than an installation of Microsoft Word.

Can I convert DOCX bytes directly to PDF bytes?
------------------------------------------------

Yes. Load the source byte array using BinaryStreamType.WordprocessingML and call Save(out byte\[\] pdfData, BinaryStreamType.AdobePDF). Text Control allocates the output array; no temporary input or output file is required by this conversion method.

How do I export PDF/A instead of a regular PDF?
------------------------------------------------

Use StreamType.AdobePDFA for file output or BinaryStreamType.AdobePDFA for byte-array output. PDF/A is intended for long-term preservation. Select and validate the output according to the requirements of the destination archive.

Why can fonts change the resulting PDF layout?
-----------------------------------------------

Fonts have different character widths and line metrics. Substituting a missing font can change line breaks and pagination. The Core font system supplies a Fonts folder, and additional font directories can be registered with the static ServerTextControl.InstallFonts method.

Can an ASP.NET Core endpoint return the converted PDF?
-------------------------------------------------------

Yes. Read the DOCX request data, call the in-memory converter, and return the PDF bytes with Results.File using application/pdf. Reading the request can be asynchronous, while the document Load and Save operations shown in this tutorial are synchronous.
